Just when it looked like a low-key parting of the ways could be on the cards, Davy Fitzgerald is to remain in his high-profile role as manager of the Waterford senior hurling team.

The Clareman was in Walsh Park for Sunday’s classic drawn county final between Ballygunner and Lismore (who looked the likely champions for so long, but credit the Gunners’ guts) and could be heard telling WLRfm commentator Kieran O’Connor that the Déise’s abundence of emerging talent was one of the persuasive factors as to why he’s keen to continue, subject to a few formalities concerning his apparently rude-again health being double-checked with the specialist who oversaw his recent heart surgery.

Hopefully the old stagers are part of Davy’s (and his new selectors’) plans too, and vice versa, for as Paul Flynn, Fergal Hartley and Dan Shanahan showed at the weekend, you can’t coach class nor expedite experience.
