PicAWaterford City has its youngest ever Mayor in the guise of John Cummins (Fine Gael) who took office last Monday night.
His election, by nine City Council votes to five for Davy Walsh (Workers Party), with Mary Roche abstaining, was a rather grand birthday present for a man who will be 26 this Saturday.
A PE teacher at St Paul’s Community College, the new First Citizen has been a Council member since 2009 and is son of Senator Maurice Cummins, a former City Councillor who held the Mayoralty in 1995/96.
His fellow party councillors, along with those of Labour and Independents Davy Daniels and Cha O’Neill, supported Cllr Cummins for the position, the latter two explaining that they were doing so in accordance with commitments given following the last local elections.
