The Strand, Dunmore East: ‘Notice to Bathers’ erected.
The EPA ‘Quality of Bathing Water in Ireland’ report for 2009 published last week is “very positive” news overall for County Waterford.
That’s according to Waterford County Council, which has expressed its satisfaction that Bonmahon, Clonea and Tramore are all listed as having ‘Good’ bathing water quality. Standards in Ardmore and Counsellor’s Strand in Dunmore East are deemed ‘Sufficient’, while Dunmore Strand received the only ‘Poor’ rating in the county.
Commenting on the report, Michael Quinn, the Council’s Director of Services, said: “We’re obviously delighted to see that that both Tramore and Ardmore have improved listings since 2008 and this is a huge positive for these popular resorts.”
The Council has recently erected a ‘Notice to Bathers’ at Dunmore Strand on the advice of the EPA. The notice alerts members of the public that the Dunmore East stream flowing onto the strand is chlorinated during the bathing season.
The Director added: “For the 2009 bathing season Dunmore Strand was classified as having poor water quality because it did not comply with the EU mandatory value for the microbiological parameter ‘faecal coliforms’. However, he said, “the non-compliance rate was marginal and occurrences of non-compliance were occasional and directly related to periods of heavy rainfall.”
