The closed road at Ballycashin Hill,
A road that is literally falling apart following the recent spell of freezing weather has left Waterford City Council with no option but to close it on a temporary basis.
Ballycashin Hill, which links Ballybeg Drive and the Green Road to the Outer Ring Road, was closed on Wednesday at 4pm on safety grounds following an engineering inspection.
Despite the closure, as indicated by signage swiftly installed by the Council, it is understood that some motorists ignored the notices and proceeded up the road, possibly causing more damage in so doing.
Indeed, one local resident, clearly unaware of the closure by Thursday morning, had no option but to turn her people carrier around having been surprised by the newly installed road block.
Transportation Director of Services Fergus Galvin said the measure had to be taken due to “a very substantial deterioration in the road surface in a number of locations arising primarily from the recent adverse weather conditions”.
Seeing literally is believing when it comes to the horrific condition of the road, something Councillor John Cummins witnessed at first hand just before the route was closed.
“I’ve been on some of the most notorious stretches of road in Ireland, but never have I seen a road in a worse state than Ballycashin Hill is at the moment,” he told The Munster Express.
