New employment in IDA-backed companies slumped alarmingly in Waterford last year.

Local Fianna Fail TD Deputy Brendan Kenneally tabled a Dáil question to Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment asking how many companies had been brought to the city and county by the IDA each year over the past decade and the number of jobs they’d provided.

Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said because of confidentiality she wasn’t permitted to provide a jobs-per-company breakdown, and quoted Forfás Annual Employment Survey figures for the 10 years in question (1999 to 2008) which shows a total of 15 IDA-supported companies set up in Waterford during this period.
