Construction on a new home for elderly people from the Waterford area will be formally started this Friday when the Minister for Arts and Sport, Martin Cullen, turns the first sod.

The Little Sisters of the Poor are building a special residential accommodation unit that will house up to 90 persons at their new location in Ferrybank. They will move from their current location at Bunkers Hill once the new facility is ready. The development is unique in that it is half in Waterford and half in County Kilkenny and will cater for many existing pensioners as well as future senior citizens.

The new home is being constructed on the site of the original Sacred Heart of Mary School where it will adjoin the current convent. There was steep competition for such a major building contract but Sisk and Co was the successful applicant. The architects are Ronnie Falconer and Co of Waterford.

The Little Sisters of the Poor are a French order that have been in Waterford for a long time. They have disposed of property in Waterford and Dublin to finance this €20m project. Se our Business Section for more details.
