The hopes and dreams of Waterford United supporters and indeed players were crushed at the RSC on Tuesday night. Having played brilliantly the previous Saturday in Tolka Park against Shelbourne the Blues were expected to go into this game full of confidence after booking home advantage courtesy of that stunning victory in Dublin, but once again they came up short in a play-off match.
Down through the years Waterford teams have lost out to clubs such as Dundalk, Kilkenny City and yes, Monaghan United, but on this occasion it was thought that the time had come for Stephen Henderson’s outfit to put the record straight and book a date with Bray Wanderers in a winner-takes-all two-legged affair.
Alas, it proved to be another false dawn and now the local club must plan for yet another season in the lower division. Perhaps that excellent win against Shels (they came from behind to win) took its toll on the Waterford players. From the opening whistle they looked leggy and during the entire course of the game they never displayed any of the flair that they displayed on many occasions during the course of the 33-game campaign.
