Roanmore’s junior hurlers got another marvellous weekend for the club off to a terrific start when seeing off the challenge of neighbours De La Salle to book a place in the Eastern hurling final.

Due to the heavy rain last Friday, this game was played in terrible conditions and it’s a credit to both sides that they managed to serve up an exciting game.

For long periods of this game, Roanmore looked like the superior side with Laurence O’Neill proving a reliable free-taker, punishing De La Salle’s defensive indiscretions.

In the 10th minute, Roanmore’s fortunes received a significant boost when Eoin Madigan raised a green flag which was to prove significant when the final result was totted up.

This helped Roanmore into a 1-5 to 0-2 lead at the break with De La Salle’s two replies coming from Barry Twomey frees.

For the majority of the second half, the sides were evenly matched and had notched three points apiece as the game neared its climax.

Roanmore took their foot off the gas in the second half, probably believing that the job was done, while De La Salle failed to close the gap to their opponents.

In the final moments of the game, Twomey, who was De La Salle’s best forward, managed to get in for a goal and a point which put a more complimentary look on the scoreboard.
