Waterford United 2; Longford Town 0
After two previous defeats at the hands of Longford Town this season, Waterford United defeated Longford Town for the first time in this campaign at the RSC last Friday night.
Friday’s win was the Blues’ first three point success since June 6th and it was badly needed.
With a trip to Athlone this Thursday, followed by two home fixtures against Shelbourne and Wexford Youths, it’s vital that Waterford re-establish the winning habit that got the league season off to such a flying start.
It took a fine tackle from Blues captain Kevin Murray to deny the visitors a breakthrough after two minutes when Peter Hynes played a superb through ball for Cathal Brady. But just as he was about to pull the trigger, Murray cleared the danger brilliantly.
On 14 minutes, Paul Murphy whipped in a right-wing cross but both Liam Kearney and Vinny Sullivan go for the same ball, with Sullivan failing to find the target.
Less than four minutes later, the Blues went ahead. John Kearney played in a near perfect right-wing corner kick that found the head of the unmarked Kevin Murray, who planted a header to the roof of the net from six yards.
It took a brilliant save from United keeper Kevin Burns to keep his side in front on 23 minutes from a stunning Mark Salmon free-kick after defender Seamus Long fouled Peter Hynes on the edge of the penalty area.
Willie John Kiely brought the best out of Longford goalkeeper Aaron Shanahan less than five minutes later when he tried his luck with a cracking shot from 25 yards but the keeper made a decent stop to deny the centre forward.
