Blackwater Community School 1-13; De La Salle 2-6
Two-time winners De La Salle College went out of this year’s Dr Harty Cup against Lismore’s Blackwater Community School in an all-Waterford clash at Fraher Field last Wednesday afternoon last.
Playing with the aid of the stiff wind which blew into the road goal in the first half, the city side were well on top and it looked as if they were going to coast to victory. However, n the second period they found the going tough and had no answers to the Lismore lads, particurly in the last quarter.
Colm Morris had De La Salle a point up in the fourth minute and when Tom Mullally hit the Lismore net less than sixty seconds later it looked as if the writing was on the wall for Blackwater.
However, De La Salle were not able to add significantly to their early lead and the westerners, led by players of the calibre of Ray Barry, Jamie Barron, Kevin Casey and Paudie Prendergast – all of whom played senior with their clubs in this year’s county championship – were able to score when chances came their way and by the break they only trailed by 1-5 to 0-4.
Despite wind-assisted Blackwater hitting the first score of the second half from the stick of Prendergast, DLS once again enjoyed the better start, added another goal six minutes after the restart to stretch their lead to six points after Colm Morris set up Tom Mullally to hit his second from close range.
Blackwater’ s response, however, was significant as within two minutes of that setback Ray Barry set up Peter O’Keeffe who rifled past Paddy Cooke in the De La Salle goal from as he came out to close the angle.
