There were some excellent performances by athletes from Waterford and Ferrybank AC in particular in Turnpike County Tipperary last Sunday.
In the Men’s Novice race the county champion Frank Halley from Ferrybank put up another very good display to finish second overall. He also led the Waterford County team to the Inter-county team title.
The team comprised two from Ferrybank AC and the remainder from West Waterford AC. West Waterford AC took the silver medal in the same team event.
Three Juveniles Win
In the Juvenile section there were three individual winners and these came from Ferrybank AC through Órla Queally U-12, Shane Quinn and Beth Walsh in the U-18 section.
Kate Veale WWAC was second in the U-16 race and other good individual performers were Michéal Power 6th U-10, Declan Power 6th U-16, Sean Curran 7th U-12, all from WWAC and Kitty Walsh Ferrybank AC 7th U-18.
In the inter-club team section there were wins for West Waterford AC in the girls U-18 and Ferrybank AC in the boys U-12. Ferrybank AC girls U-10 took the silver medal.
In the Inter-County Section there were three third placings by Waterford in the girls U-12, U-18 and boys U-12.
McCarthy’s Good U.S.A. Run
Last Saturday David McCarthy competing with Providence College had an excellent run in the Pre-National Collegiate Cross-Country race over 8,000m in Indiana.
He was sixth overall in a time of 23 minutes 40 seconds, just ten seconds behind the winner and he was also the first Irish athlete home.
Last year he was in the fifties in the same event.
WLR/FM Run for Life
In high winds and rain there was a
marvellous entry of close to 550 for the WLR/FM 10 Miles “Run for Life” in aid of the South East Cancer Foundation and by any standards
it was a most successful event especially with the amount of money raise by the
articipants for the new Solas Centre being
built in the city.
For the record the first three men home were Peter Mooney in 59 minutes 5 seconds, Brian O’Sullivan second in 61.56 and Noel Murphy third in 62.02.
Muriel Cummins was first lady in 63.08, with Susan Finn second in 66.39 and Diane Behan was third in 67.08.
First man over-40 was Michael McGrath, over-50 PJDwyer, Junior – Mark Gunning.
First lady over-40 Mags Kirwan, over-50 Bernie Power.
The organisers wish to thank all those who helped out on the day in various capacities and the Gardaí.
National Marathon
On Bank Holiday Monday next October 27th in association with the Annual Dublin City Marathon the National event will be incorporated and there will be a sizeable entry from Waterford.
On Sunday November 9th the Munster U-9, 11, 13, 15,17, 19 and Intermediate Championships male and female are in Cooraclare, Co.Clare at 12 noon.
Special Meeting
On Saturday November 8th there will be an E.G.M. of the Athletic Association of Ireland in The Sheraton Hotel Athlone at 10.30am. The purpose of this meeting is to have the Association incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee and to agree memorandum and Articles of Association of the New Company. This came about from a motion at the last Congress.
National Awards Dinner
On Saturday 15th November the National Awards Dinner will be held in the Crown Plaza Hotel in Dublin. For accommodation details see Athletics Ireland website.
County Championships
On Sunday November 16th in St.Augustine’s College in Abbeyside the County Masters and Intermediate Cross-Country Championships as well as the Juvenile B U-9,11,13,15 will be held with a 1pm start. In the B juvenile events there will be medals for the first six home in each event.
Winter League
The Annual Winter League in the city will commence this year on Thursday November 6th at the RSC and continue each Thursday with registration at 6.30pm and the runs start at 7pm.
There will be six runs before Christmas and a further six after and Waterford Athletic Club are the organisers. Reflective clothing must be worn by all competitors.
National Fixture
A reminder again this week of the big athletic attraction in the county on Sunday November 23rd.
On that day the All Ireland Senior and Junior Inter-County Cross-Country Championships are on Tramore Racecourse as well as the Juvenile even age groups.
Hundreds of athletes from all over Ireland will compete.
