Southend crush Johnville

Two games played. Two games lost. That was Johnville’s record following this defeat in Southend Park. Declan Phelan gave them the lead from the penalty spot but that was a good as it got for them. Lee Hayes (42 mins) and Lee Russell (44 mins) had the home side leading at the break. John O’Leary pulled a goal back for Johnville on 56 minutes but Southend finished very well and strikes from Patrick Carey on 62 minutes and Chris Feehan gave Southend a convincing victory.
Good win for the champions
St Saviours 0; Waterford Crystal 1
Not a game for the faint hearted this one, with no quarter asked or given. Brian Arrigan struck the Crystal woodwork after 25 minutes as they tried to build on their opening day victory away to Johnville. Derek Hearne then saved brilliantly from Stephen Dalton.
The only goal of the game arrived on 59 minutes when Joe Watson pounced after the Saints’ goalkeeper Graham Cleary had parried a 25 yard shot from Gavin Roche. The ball ran lose to Morgan Pender but his effort came of the post and Watson was in the right place to find the net. Conor Fell of Crystal was sent off however for celebrating the goal in the wrong manner. He was already on a yellow card.
Hibs go two points clear
Hibernians 3; Bohemians 1
Hibernians, who were promoted from Division 1A, made it two wins from two games with a very impressive victory over Bohemians. David McGrath put them in front after 15 minutes but Bohs got back on level terms via a Glen O’Neill penalty 5 minutes later.
On the half hour mark, David McGrath scored his third goal of the season, also from the penalty spot. Clive Prendergast wrapped up the points for Brian O’Keeffe’s young side midway through the second period.
Stuttering start for Carrick
Carrick United 1; Tramore 2
League experts Carrick United were still looking for their first win of the season following this defeat in Tom Drohan Park. Having drawn with Bohs on the opening day of the season they were confident of getting a positive result from this game but Gavin Faulkner scored a fine goal for the seasiders after 23 minutes. Robbie Phelan made it 2-0 on 55 minutes and that goal gave Carrick a mountain to climb. They did pull a goal back from an Adam McSharry free kick on 61 minutes but they were unable to get anything from the game against a talented Tramore team.
