‘Spending a penny’ in public conveniences in County Waterford will cost the County Council €114,010 in 2010, a decrease of €12,374 on this year, the Council’s budget meeting was told in Dungarvan before Christmas.
While the budget available has been substantially reduced, opening hours for public conveniences will be prioritised to meet the most effective use of resources and the greatest demand, it was stated.
It is a requirement of the Blue Flag Award that public conveniences are available during the bathing season. In general the expenditure will cover the cost of opening and maintaining public conveniences from June 1 next onwards.
Three leakage detection teams have been set up by the Council in the battle to conserve water at local level. The Council’s water conservation programme involves mains replacement and rehabilitation.
The Council has allocated €13,536,348 for water services in 2010 which is a slight increase compared to 2009. Work is scheduled for completion early in 2010 on the duplication of the water production capacity of the East Waterford Supply Plant at a cost to the Government of €21 million.
