The title may have the desired effect to attract readers but there is a much deeper and muck more fulfilling context inside the collection of short stories by Loughrea Creative Writing Group. Thirty-eight stories caught a whole range of styles and emotions and while in some ways you might expect mini-Maeve Binchy cameos, you will be pleasantly surprised by St. Patrick’s Day In Ghana.
Many of the pieces are memory pieces that recreate a past glory, a time of innocence and first love. Eamonn McNally’s We Were Strangers, had the sad emotional thump of real experience, set initially on Easter Sunday at a showband dance in a Temperance Hall and quickly moves to London and a summer of romance, where lovers spoke of the Vietnam War and protests in flower-power San Francisco.
McNally, again, caught my attention with another memory nostalgia piece, The Wooden Seats At The Picture Hall.
The stories in this collection are the result of writing workshops run by writer and media journalist, Liam Nolan and his stories bookend this collection. The opening one cleverly recreates very obliquely, a major event in Irish political history and the closer is a gem that Saki would have been proud of. Nolan also contributed an American style gem, Running The Bases, that recreates a legendary family event in baseball and manages, in about five pages, to span three generations.
Elizabeth Mitchell has a great story, economically told, about climbing Croagh Patrick. Johnny Kelly, in just over two pages, in The Entertainer and just one line – I will never forget that smile – will do your heart good.
Raymond Gately looks at dreams, with a dollop of sadness and his final line – Pray for the wanderer, pray for me – brought me back to a calk dusty Christian Brothers classroom in Manor Street.
Paradoxically, the story A Time To Remember, is the newest story of them all, as Joe Conmy describes a recent Leonard Cohen concert and it was about growing old gracefully – Let this music soothe my aching bones.
