Two local area plans will emerge shortly to provide a blueprint for the future development of Waterford City north of the river Suir.

The recent commencement of work on local area plans for the Environs of Waterford in South Kilkenny and the administrative area of Waterford City north of the river, including the North Quays, provides a unique opportunity for individuals, community groups and those with property interests to forward plan the development of the area over the next six years. These two plans together will provide a development framework for the north city environs for that period.

“They are extremely timely given the advanced stages of major infrastructure projects in the area, not least the Waterford Bypass and second river crossing, the Waterford sewerage scheme and the new district shopping centre at Ferrybank”, says former Kilkenny County Council planner Peter Thomson, who has recently established his own independent planning consultancy in Kilkenny and Waterford City. He has offices in Waterford Business Park and Kells, Co Kilkenny.

Submissions on the local area plans will shortly be accepted by the respective local authorities with a view to their being adopted and in force by mid 2008.
