Next Sunday, January 18th, there is a very attractive Munster Cross-Country Championship meeting in St Augustines College, Abbeyside, starting at 12 noon. On the programme are the Munster Senior and Junior Men’s and Womens Championships, as well as the juvenile Inter-County Relays: U10, 12, 14 for boys and girls.

While a number of Waterford athletes will be missing due to other engagements it will nevertheless be well supported, with athletes from Waterford Clubs in each category.

Also on Sunday, the All Ireland Juvenile Indoor Combined Events are staged in Nenagh.

Celtic International

This weekend the Celtic Cross-Country International is in Cardiff and four athletes from Ferrybank AC compete, namely, Patricia Barry, Paddy Flynn, Shane Quinn and Paddy Hogan.

Winter League

Another leg of the Paddy Byrne Winter League will take place in the city this Thursday at 7pm from the RSC, with registration from 6.15.

The organisers wish to thank the Gardaí who come along each evening helping out with traffic control and also wish to thank the motorists for their co-operation. There are five more evenings left in the league.

Mount Sion Road Race

On Saturday, January 24th, the Annual 5 Miles Road Run and Walk will take place from the Mount Sion Centre in Waterford, organised by the Mount Sion Darts Club in association with Waterford AC. Proceeds go to the Waterford Branch of the Alzheimer’s Society. Registration from 12.30pm at Mount Sion Centre. Prizes for Junior, Senior and masters. Showers available and also refreshments. Race begins at 2pm.

The same day the National Junior Indoor Championships take place in Nenagh. The AAI Games are again in Nenagh on Sunday the 25th, and the same day the All-Ireland “B” Juvenile Cross-Country Championships are held in Boyle, Co Roscommon.

The Annual Munster Sports Star Awards Banquet will be held in Blarney on January 31st. The following are the Waterford winners for 2008:

Mallow Road Race

Last Sunday a number of athletes from West Waterford AC and Waterford AC competed in the annual 10 miles road race. Sandis Bralitis, West Waterford AC, finished third overall in a time of 52 minutes, 53 seconds. His clubmate Ravis Zakis was fourth in 54.04.

Brea Cooke, Waterford AC, was second over 35 in the ladies section and Ann Fitzgerald from the same club was third over-50 and con Kelleher Waterford AC was also third in the over-55 section.

All-Ireland Masters

Two Waterford ladies had doubles at the All Ireland Masters Indoor Championships in Nenagh last Sunday. Mary B Ryan-Jennings, Waterford AC, won the 200m and 3000m over-50 and she also finished second in the 800m and 1500m.

Terri Gough from WWAC was first in the 60m and 1500m over-60 and had two second placings in the 400m and 800m.

Baldy Man Run

Anyone with sponsorship cards from the Baldy Man Run in Tramore on December 28th last are asked to get them immediately to Michael Flynn at 086-2520231 or Fintan Walsh on 087-6508307. They will also be collected at the Winter League this week.
