Blackwater Community School 7-15; Doon CBS 2-10
A personal tally of three goals and three points for Darragh Fives and a 20-point victory for Blackwater Community School over Doon CBS at Templederry last Wednesday was not enough to give last year’s beaten semi-finalists a place in the last eight of this season’s Dr Harty Cup quarter-finals.
The Lismore school needed to win this game big and to ensure that St Caiman’s from Shannon lost to Our Lady’s from Templemore by a similar margin if they were to advance. While the first part was achieved, it made little difference as things panned out, because 24 hours later Caimin’s beat Templemore College by 2-7 to 0-10.
Throughout the course of the hour, Blackwater CS were well on top. While seven goals went past Colm Cummins in the Doon goal, it could be argued that he was the best man on the field as he made about five saves that deprived the Lismore outfit certain goals, and such was his performance, and the turmoil currently in Limerick hurling, that the Doon netminder could well find himself on Justin McCarthy’s panel!
The Blackwater boys played into the teeth of the strong in the opening half but still scored 3-7 before the break, 2-5 of which came from its lethal full forward line of Fives flanked on either side by Fionain Murray and Peter O’Keeffe.
Blackwater refused to let up after the change of ends, even after the introduction of a number of subs, including 14-year-old Stephen Bennett who bagged himself a brace of goals.
Fives and O’Keeffe also netted goals in the second period, but it was all for nothing, with De La Salle College, who won three from three, the only Deise representatives in the last eight come the New Year.
