Last weekend Kelly Proper, Ferrybank AC, got her competitive season off to a great start at the Indoor Meeting in Birmingham.

On Saturday she won the long jump competition with a leap of 6.21m and finished fourth in the final of the 60m in a p.b. time of 7.60secs.

Then on Sunday, Kelly finished third in the final of the 200m in a time of 24.12 secs. However, in winning her semi-final she set a new personal best time of 23.92 secs – well ahead of her previous best time for the distance.

Niamh Whelan set a personal best time in winning her semi-final of the 60m on Saturday in 7.52 secs, but in the final finished 5th – one place behind Kelly in 7.61 secs. On Sunday Niamh didn’t make it to the 200m final, having ran 24.72.

Billy Ryan although setting a p.b. time of 22.52 in the 200m semi-final, yet didn’t make the final, and Kevin Cooper also failed narrowly to make the 1500m final.

All-Ireland Indoors in Belfast

 

 

This weekend the All-Ireland Senior Indoor Championships are in The Odyssey Arena, Belfast and a small but select number of athletes from Waterford will compete. The aforementioned Kelly Proper defends her long jump title and should emerge victorious again.

Bralitis wins Dungarvan 10 Miles

 

 

Over 900 competed in the Quantum Life, Dungarvan 10 Miles road race on Sunday last which was a record number of entrants.

Sandis Bralitis of WWAC was the overall winner in a time of 51 minutes, 36 seconds. Michael Herlihy North Cork was second in 52.25 and Colin Merritt, Carrignavar, was third in 54.03.

Rosemary Ryan of Bilboa in Limerick set a new course record in winning the ladies’ section in 57.27. Pauline Curley, Tullamore was second in 58.51 and Madeline Dorney, Thurles Crokes, came third in 61.21.

First men over-40: Michael O’Connor, Sligo; over-45: Cathal O’Connell, St Finbarrs; over-50: Stephen Griffin, Tralee Hrs; over-55: Joe Gough, WWAC; over-60: TJ Beatty, Loughrea; over-65: Mick Neville, Tullamore.

Munster Championships

 

 

Next Saturday and Sunday the Munster U-13 to 17 Indoor Championships are in Nenagh and on the Sunday the Munster Masters Indoors are also staged at the same venue.

On Saturday and Sunday week, February 14th and 15th, the All-Ireland Universities take place in Nenagh.

On Sunday the 15th the All Ireland Intermediate and Masters Cross country Championships are in Santry in Dublin.

The following weekend, February 21st and 22nd, the Munster U-9 to 12 Indoors, as well as the U-18 and 19 Championships, are also on in Nenagh and also the U-13-19 Combined Events.

Another fixture for Sunday, February 22nd, will be the Rás na hEireann in Dunleer, Co Louth.

The Munster Athletic A.G.M. will be in Lawlor’s Hotel, Dungarvan, on Saturday, Feb 14 at 1.30pm.

Anne Valley 5 Miles

 

 

On Saturday week, February 14th, the Annual 5 Miles Road Race and Walk in aid of the South Eastern Cancer Foundation will be in Dunhill with a 12 noon start. Entries taken at Harney’s Dunhill from 10am on the day. Sponsorship cards are available at Harney’s Shop in Dunhill. There are team and individual prizes.
