Four Waterford League clubs were in action on Sunday in cup football and three of them advanced to the next stage. Villa played hosts to Rock Rovers in the 4th round of the FAI Youth Cup and they defeated a hotly-fancied team from Carrick-on-Suir in Connors Park.
Playing against the breeze, the Waterford club led 2-0 at the interval. They scored once again in the second half. Danny Walsh scored a brace and Jack Gaule also found the net. Also in the FAI Youth Cup, Waterford Crystal lost to Clonmel Town at the ‘Glass’ complex. Crystal had a chance to take the game into extra time when they were awarded a penalty near the end with the score standing at 1-0 but Adam Forsey missed from the spot.
There was unsavoury scenes prior to the penalty, and after the game involving supporters.
Southend United are through to the last eight of the FAI Under 17 Cup after beating Cahir Park in Southend Park. Stuart Mitchell scored the only goal of the game in the first half.
This contest was marred by a bad knee injury sustained by the Southend player Dylan Murphy. The talented Dylan, a brother of Daryl Murphy, was rushed to hospital. Thankfully the medical staff at Waterford Regional Hospital appeared to replace his knee in double quick time but nevertheless it was a bad break for the talented young player.
In the Munster Junior Cup, Carrick United defeated Killumney in Cork 3-0. Glen Keane scored twice and Anthony Power netted the third goal near the end. The holders of the FAI Junior Cup are still going strong in that competition as well this season. They are now in Round 5 of the MFA Cup. The draw will take place on Thursday of next week.
