How can we continue to allow drunk drivers who have killed other road users back behind the wheel of car within a day or a week of their ending another person’s life?
As things stand, there is no legal impediment that prevents a drunk driver driving between the time of their committing the initial offence and their eventual court date for said offence.
And while Gardaí possess the power to impound a drunk driver’s vehicle, they cannot impound such an individual’s driving licence.
Therefore, there is nothing stopping such an individual borrowing a friend or relative’s car and returning to the road. How can this be?
