Kilkenny champions Ballyhale Shamrocks are set to nominate 22-year-old former WIT Fitzgibbon Cup winner TJ Reid as captain of the county’s senior hurlers this year.

With his brother Eoin to be vice-captain, given their clubmate Michael Fennelly was the Cats’ skipper last year but wasn’t a regular starter, Ballyhale have proposed that in the Reids’ absence Henry Shefflin should lead the team; and whoever is wearing the armband starting any finals will collect any silverware they might win.

It’s unclear whether Waterford intend sticking with last year’s system where the captaincy was shared between Ken McGrath and Lt Stephen Molumphy, who is training away on a makeshift hurling pitch while on UN duty in Chad. Declan Prendergast stood in last weekend, but, as even Kilkenny folk might concur, while two’s company, three’s a crowd.
