BOTH Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael emerged with seven seats each following last Friday’s Waterford City & County Council election.Elsewhere, there were significant gains for Labour while Sinn Féin just about managed to hold its own. Health issues boosted the votes of some of Waterford’s local election candidates but ongoing controversies surrounding University Hospital Waterford (UHW) didn’t impact adversely on Fine Gael.

Cardiac care campaigner Cllr Matt Shanahan (Ind), who was co-opted onto the Council just last January, topped the poll in Waterford City East – sending a clear message that the pursuit of 24/7 cardiac care remains a key issue for the electorate.
