Tesco is likely to be open in Tramore by July next and work on the town’s new shopping centre at Strand Road, which is to have Dunnes as anchor tenants, is expected to commence in March.

That news emanated from Tuesday night’s monthly meeting of Tramore Town Council after Ann Marie Power expressed disappointment over apparent slow progress by Tesco, Dunnes and Aldi in establishing outlets, nearly two and a half years after adoption of a new retail strategy for the resort. She wondered when they would see any or all of the three retail giants trading.

Town Manager Brian White told her that the Council Council merely granted planning permission for such projects; it did not build shopping malls. “They have gone through the planning process and it is now up to them”, he added.

He said it was expected that the Tesco road work development, which was underway, would be completed quite quickly. And he was advised that work on the Strand Road shopping centre would start in March.

Mayor Joe Conway said his information was that Tesco had commenced recruitment of staff and hoped to be open by July.
