Waterford United 1; Shelbourne 0
Waterford United turned in their best display of the season on Saturday night when they defeated the leaders Shelbourne in what was a cracking affair.
The result was a bad one for the visitors as they lost their lead at the top of the table due to Cork City who recorded a facile four nil victory over Salthill Devon. After leading the league from the outset, Shelbourne have now slipped back down to second place.
Paul O’Brien, the Blues manager, made three changes from the team which lost to Longford Town the previous week. Out went Gary Dunphy, Adam McSherry and Paul Murphy. In came Sean Maguire, Seamus Long and Brian Nolan and all three played suerbly well.
For the first time since the away victory in Turners Cross against Cork City in June, the players displayed spirit in the blue shirt, and one had have to wonder why they could not have played like this all season. Perhaps it had something to do with strong words the club chairman John O’Sullivan wrote in the match programme.
