The European Athletics Championships began Tuesday in Barcelona, where West Waterford’s Jamie Costin placed 20th in the men’s 20-kilometre walk. In stifling conditions, Cork’s Robert Heffernan missed out on a medal by just 11 seconds, finishing in fourth position.

Kelly Proper (Ferrybank) was in action in the long jump at the time of this section being finalized yesterday.

Club mate and national champion Niamh Whelan goes in the 200 metre heats on Thursday morning and will have to produce a very fast time to progress into the next round.

Both Proper and Whelan have been named on the Irish 4 x 100 metres relay panel of five athletes from which the final four will be selected they compete later in the week.
