They may have lost to the same opponents at the same stage as last year, but Waterford left Fraher Field with heads held high after a compelling Munster Intermediate decider last (Thursday) night.
The hosts led by two at the break, but by full-time, the defending champions had turned things around and deservedly won by a brace of points.
Waterford opened the game brightly and looked as if they were going to exact some revenge for last years crushing defeat, as Mark Gorman bisected the upright twice from frees inside the opening four minutes.
Indiscipline cost Cork badly during the first half as they conceded free after free, with Waterford’s Mark Gorman converting four of these between the posts.
But Waterford indiscipline ought to have yielded a goal for Cork after 12 minutes, when Dungarvan’s Shane Kearney felled the onrushing Michael O’Sullivan.
However, Mark Harrington’s goal-bound effort was brilliantly saved by a combination of Adrian Power and John O’Leary in the goal, with the Ballyduff Lower man putting the ball to safety for a 65.
Despite this, when assessing territory and possession, Waterford’s lead ought to have been healthier than it was going in at the break (0-7 to 0-5).
