Possibly nothing sums up the Waterford footballers’ superb performance last Sunday so much as Wicklow manager Mick O’Dwyer’s anguished expression as the Garden County provided rich pickings at Fraher Field.
As Wicklow surged through to the final dozen in last year’s championship, Pat Spillane said of his old mentor Micko: “If you could bottle that man’s optimism and enthusiasm this country would be off its knees in the morning… In every county in Ireland there’s 15 footballers as good as the next, as long as there’s the commitment and the belief.”
John Owens and his players must have been listening.
