Waterford’s under-21s were given a footballing lesson when they were compressively beaten by Kerry in this one-sided Munster championship semi-final at Fraher Field on Saturday last.
From the off the visitors were always on top and although the scoreboard showed them to be only four points in front at the break, it was not a true reflection on the proceedings.
In the second half the Kingdom side showing their true class, adding 1-12 to their tally, whereas Waterford could only score once in the entire second period.
The difference in standards was clear for all to see. The fact that Waterford registered just three flags over the course of the hour told its own story. The fact that that all came from the boot of Adam Brophy, and from frees, told another.
Kerry, who had beaten reigning Munster champions Cork in the quarter-finals, struck 19 scores, all but five of which came from play, a good return on any given day.
They began their route in the third minute when Daithi Casey pointed. Further scores from Paul Geaney and Barry John Keane gave the visitors a three-point lead before the midway mark of the first half.
Waterford’s first score came around the same time when Adam Brophy pointed for John Owen’s charges and it looked like Kerry wouldn’t have it all their own way.
However, disaster soon struck when James McGrath had to be helped from the field with a leg injury and further points from a Barry John Walsh placed ball and two efforts from Paul Geaney extended Kerry’s lead to five points.
