Next up for Waterford in Division 4 of the National Football League is the visit of London next Sunday. At the time of writing, it is not known where the game will take place as London have requested that the game be played in Walsh Park, while Waterford obviously favour the more familiar surrounds of Fraher Field.
A win against London will be a must if Waterford’s promotion campaign is to stay on track. Last season, an unbeaten Deise outfit came a cropper when the visited the English capital and the promotion dream all but died in Ruislip.
This year one feels that Waterford will not take London so much for granted and the confidence gained from Sunday’s win in Ballinamore could prove invaluable this weekend.
As the recession continues in Ireland, the influx of footballers and hurlers to London continues unabated. In theory, this should lead to a strengthening of the Exiles’ inter-county outfits. They are unlikely to win promotion from Division 4 but they will have their designs on causing a major shock in the championship when Roscommon visit at the end of May.
Former Waterford manager John Kiely has spoken of how London are no longer the whipping boys of old and will cause a surprise or two in the near future. Their star player is almost certainly the former Galway panellist Paul Geraghty who will line out at midfield this Sunday.
They didn’t get off to the best of starts last Sunday when they wee easily beaten by Mickey Ned O’Sullivan’s Limerick side who came away from Ruislip with a 10-point winning margin.
Despite the continued improvement in this London side, they continue to travel badly. On that basis and on the fact that they showed fine form in winning in Leitrim last week, Waterford should win this one.
