The sale by Waterford County Council of a parcel of land at Cheekpoint was questioned by Sinn Fein Councillor Pat Fitzgerald at a Council meeting in Dungarvan last week. Cllr Fitzgerald claimed that Council members were not given important information prior to recently agreeing to sell the land.
Following the decision to sell he visited the Land Registry Office in Waterford and was informed that the land that was being sold as a site was part of public lands owned by the Council. If the sale went ahead it would leave many more acres of public land without easy access to the public road and therefore considerably devalued.
As the land was zoned residential it was a valuable piece of public property and it would not be in the best interests of the public to have primary access to the public road sold as a site.
Cllr Fitzgerald said that both he and his colleague Cllr Brendan Mansfield abstained from voting on the sale because of a lack of information at the time.
Cllr John Carey (FG) said a young couple wanted to build a home on their land and needed a bit of extra ground from the Council for a septic tank.
Director of Services Denis McCarthy said he visited the site and found it was possible for the Council to get access to their lands from two points.
