Tramore 3; Killworth Celtic 2
Killworth Celtic, who are the table toppers in the West Waterford-East Cork First Division and favourites to get promoted to the Premier League, made Tramore fight all the way in Graun Park on Saturday evening last.
It took a late goal from Michael Downey to secure the seasiders a place in the next round. Downey came on as a substitute and the former Waterford United striker was just the kind of player they required to win a “banana skin” like this one.
Tramore took the lead after only two minutes of play and at that stage many thought this would be an easy game for the home side, but things did not turn out that way. Far from it.
Francis Rockett played a clever pass out to the feet of Leigh Quilty and his first time pass released Robbie Phelan who made no mistake as he side footed the ball home from fourteen yards. Minutes later Quilty played a short corner to Ross Douglas who was in a good position on the edge of the box but the full back drove his shot high and wide.
Celtic had their first chance on 15 minutes. Joe Ahearne played a neat one-two with David O’Donoghue but Ahearne drove his shot into the arms of Tramore keeper AJ Murray.
Tramore went close again on 17 minutes when Celtic defender Brian Tobin fouled Colm Walsh on the edge of the box, Leigh Quilty’s shot was on target but Mark Crotty dived low to his left to make a fine save.
