St Patrick’s Athletic 0; Waterford United 2

When these two clubs played out a 1-1 draw at the RSC the previous Saturday, Waterford United manager Stephen Henderson said his young team (the youngest in the entire country) would travel to Richmond Park on Tuesday without any fear.

He also stated that his charges would take the game to Jeff Kenna’s men from the off. When the teams were announced it was clear he was a man of his word. He left out the two wide players from the original game, namely Kevin Waters and Joe Mulcahy, and brought in Dave Warren and Vinny Sullivan.

He opted to play a 4-3-3 formation with Graham Cummins, Willie John Kiely and Sullivan as out-and-out strikers and his tactics work a treat because St Pats were under the kosh for long periods. So much so that at the final whistle it was no surprise that the Blues had booked a semi-final spot along with Sporting Fingal, Sligo Rovers and Bray Wanderers.
