Waterford Virginia
Waterford was founded about 1733 by Amos Janney, a Quaker from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Other Quakers followed him there. Mills were built along Catoctin Creek. The village grew until it was the second largest town in Loudoun County (this was before the Civil War). Many buildings still in use in the village were built before 1840. Known as Janney’s Mill until the 1780s, the early commercial centre then became the village of Waterford. Today visitors to Waterford, Virginia, experience many of the same views as residents in the 19th century. Waterford preserves the ambiance and many of the structures that characterized it during its heyday as a flour milling town in the 19th century.
The village is a Loudoun County Historic and Cultural Conservation Site, on the Virginia Historic Landmarks Register, on the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1970, the entire village, with the farmland surrounding it, was designated a National Historic Landmark District, one of only three such landmarks in the entire United States.
Waterford’s stagnation as a commercial centre after the Civil War meant it was not worth demolishing the old to make way for new development. The old town and its surrounding farms were able to slumber undisturbed, like Rip Van Winkle, for many years, By 1937, when the Historic American Buildings Survey was completed in Waterford, most buildings in the village were falling into disrepair – or falling apart. That same decade, members of old Waterford families, beginning with brothers Edward and Leroy Chamberlin, began buying and restoring buildings. These restorationists established the Waterford Foundation in 1943 to “revive and stimulate a community interest in re-creating the town of Waterford as it existed in previous times with its varying crafts and activities. The Foundation has played an important role in revitalizing the physical fabric of Waterford as well as increasing the public’s knowledge of life and work in an early American rural community. How Waterford got its name
Waterford had two or three names in colonial times; Janney’s Mill, Fairfax, and Milltown. While the first two names are part of the historical record, the third’s textural appearance in found first in 1915, the anonymous writer asserting that “Mill Town” was a name for the village in its founding era. … the same anonymous writer, who in 1915 first called the early hamlet “Mill Town,” also forwarded to us the origin of the village’s present name: “One of the most enterprising of its citizens,an Irish Shoemaker by the name of Thomas Moore had emigrated this country from or near Waterford in Ireland. And he very patriotically named the rising city for the place of his birth. Thomas Moore might have had persuasive powers, for the bustling seaport city of Waterford has little in common with the village, save for the latter’s two fords(?) and water. Waterford, Ireland, though, did have a substantial Quaker community.
Waterford Michigan
Waterford Charter Township is a charter township of Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 73,150. Waterford is also part of “The Lakes Area” because of the large number of freshwater lakes throughout the township. Other Lakes Area communities include Commerce Township, Union Lake, Walled Lake, Wolverine Lake and Wixom.
History
Lewis Cass, the third governor of Michigan Territory, established the boundaries of Oakland County in 1819. Waterford Township was organized in 1834.Before being displaced by European settlers in the 18th and early 19th century, the area was populated with Iroquoian and Algonquian tribes of the Hurons, Ottawas, Ojibwas, Potawatomies, Miamis, Sauk, Sashabaws, and others. During the French and Iroquois Wars, the Iroquois expanded westward and maintained a temporary presence in the area, having displaced other tribes. However, by the time white settlers ventured into the area that would become Waterford Village, there were few Native Americans living in the area.
In the latter part of 1818 Oliver Williams and his brother-in-law, Alpheus Williams, entered the first land purchase for $2.00 an acre ($494/km²). Archibald Phillips and Alpheus Williams purchased 161.40 acres (653,200 m2) in what became the Village of Waterford. The first house of the Village of Waterford was built by Alpheus Williams on the north bank of the river. Archibald Phillips built his home across from the south corner where Andersonville Road meets Dixie Highway. Williams and Phillips also built the first dam where the Clinton River crossed over the Saginaw Trail and erected the first saw mill.
Waterford, New York
Waterford, New York, (population 2,204) is located at the area of confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. The area was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years prior to the arrival of Henry Hudson in 1609. During the American Revolution, Waterford was the location of many military encampments. The village of Waterford was incorporated on March 25, 1794.
Waterford’s location on the Hudson River placed it in an ideal spot for trade, which increased after the opening of the Champlain and Erie canals in 1825. Waterford became a gateway to the canal system and a vital manufacturing town. Today, the canal system is mostly used for recreation.
The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Cent is housed in an 1830 Greek Revival home, overlooking the Mohawk River and the Old Champlain Canal. The museum includes a working scale model of a 19th century canal lock, based on the Old Champlain Canal Lock #4 at the front of the museum.
