The nationwide electrician’s strike enforced by members of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union (TEEU) since Monday has effectively closed down construction sites across the city and county.
“Since anyone asked me to explain the situation, they’ve quickly identified that this is not just about money, this about conditions and honouring commitments made to workers,” said Pat Kavanagh of Waterford TEEU.
“And we have been blown over by the turnout of our members in Waterford, the south east and all over the country. We are at one on this issue.”
Seven sites in the city, including the new Little Sisters of the Poor project in Ferrybank, have been picketed by TEEU members since Monday, which has cited overdue wage increases owed to electricians.
Speaking to Pat Kenny on RTE Radio on Tuesday morning, Construction Industry Federation Director General Tom Parlon spoke of the “untold damage” that the dispute causing.
Not mincing his words, the former Minister of State declared: “we cannot let the lunatics be in charge.”
