Dan Mulhall
Waterford man Dan Mulhall has been appointed Irish Ambassador to Germany, although he will not take up the post until the second Lisbon referendum is held.
Since 2005 he has been Director-General at the Department of Foreign Affairs’ European Union and OECD Division.
Having been educated at Mount Sion, UCC and Murdoch University in Western Australia, Mr Mulhall joined that Department in 1978 and has held positions in its economic, political, development cooperation and press/information divisions. In 1994-95 he was a member of the Secretariat of Ireland’s Forum for Peace and Reconciliation.
He has had diplomatic postings in New Delhi, Vienna, Brussels, Edinburgh (as Consul General of Ireland in Scotland) and Kuala Lumpur, where he was Ireland’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam from 2001 to 2005. He held that position during the tragedy of the December 2004 tsunami.
He will be 54 next month and his is one of 24 new ambassador-level appointments which have been approved by the Cabinet.
It is ironic to recall now that in late 2006 Mr Mulhall was guest speaker at a Mount Sion School Annual Student Recognition Night in City Hall, at which he said that during his postings abroad he had seen the perception of Ireland change dramatically to the extent that we had then become the second wealthiest country in the EU.
Son of Thomas and the late Alice Mulhall, Lower Yellow Road, Dan is married to an Australian lady, Greta, and they have two children, Tara and Jason. He has three brothers, Anthony, Brendan and Kieran and two sisters, Maria and Louise.
