Carrick Utd team that beat Newcastlewest last Sunday in Tom Drohan Park.
Carrick United advanced to the semi-final of the Munster Junior Cup win an easy 5-0 win over a disappointing Newcastlewest side last Sunday afternoon.
Still hurting from their FAI Junior Cup defeat, Carrick were expecting a difficult time against the runaway Desmond League Leaders, but apart from the opening 10 minutes the game was never a contest. In the six rounds to date Liam Well’s charges have scored 25 goals and have yet to concede, including three 5-0s and a 6-0 win.
Newcastlewest did begin brightly and should have been in front in the first minute. The home defence misjudged a simple through ball and a forward clean through dragged his shot wide. With Carrick finding the early exchanges difficult, another swift Newcastlewest move saw the ball flash across Adrian Walsh’s goal.
That was as good as it got for the visitors, as Carrick slowly began to get a grip. Anthony Power, on his return after injury, showed his hunger for action as he tormented his opposing full-back.
Likewise, once they got into the game the Newcastlewest defence has no answer to the skill and trickery of Adam McSherry and Daryl Kavanagh. Adam McSherry, scoring twice in a minute, knocked the heart out of the visitors. He first beat the keeper to what seemed a over-hit pass sliding the ball to the net from the corner of the six-yard box.
Seconds later he combined delightfully with Daryl Kavanagh, laying off a delightful ball and taking the return before flashing to the net. With the visitors shellshocked, another wonderful pass from Daryl Kavanagh set up Alan Ryan to strike a cracking goal from just inside the penalty area. As the half wore on Adam McSherry’s free-kicks kept the visiting keeper busy.
Newcastlewest showed a lot of perseverance in the second half, but Carrick continued to have the upper hand. More goals should have followed long before late strikes from Barry Murphy and Daryl Kavanagh finished the scoring. After the game a Limerick reporter stated that Newcastlewest were not used to and could not cope with the pace and ability of the Carrick team.
Carrick will face Regional of Limerick in the semi-final. The second semi-final is between Tramore and the winners of Fairview and Dungarvan. There was chat last Sunday that both semi-finals might be played as a double bill on Easter Sunday at Ozier Park.
