Thurles CBS 0-15; Blackwater CS 0-7

Having been beaten in the previous two Dr Harty Cup Finals, both against De La Salle, Thurles CBS will be hoping to make it third time lucky in 2009, after they reached this year’s decider following a comprehensive 0-15 to 0-7 win over Waterford’s only remaining flag-bearers, Blackwater Community School, at Ardfinnan on Saturday last.

Throughout the competition the County Tipperary College side have played some superb hurling and went in to the semi-finals as favourites. They showed just why during the course of the hour, as Kieran Morris with six points and four from John O’Neill gave them a more than double-scores victory.

In their games to date in the competition the Blackwater boys had also played some very good hurling and it was no fluke that they got so far in the competition. However, they had to give second best here to a much stronger and more experienced side. The Lismore lads found the going tough at times and against a cohesive backline, their forwards failed to seriously test a strong Thurles defence, though Finian Murray picked off five fine points.

Blackwater CS, to their credit, did give the Thurles side a game for about three quarters of an hour. Thurles CBS in the early exchanges looked as if they were going to record a comprehensive win as they raced into an early lead, but by the brake, the Blackwater side had the lead pulled back to just two points, 0-7 to 0-5 in the Thurles side’s favour and continued to stay with the Thurles College side for opening period of the second half.
