Umbro FAI Junior Cup holders Carrick United will play hosts to Athenry in Tom Drohan Park this Sunday.

Athenry were the side who lost the 2006 final to Waterford Crystal in Terryland Park, Galway. This game will attract a huge attendance and patrons are asked to get to the Coolnamuck venue as early as possible. Kick-off is at 2pm.

Carrick were dealt a massive blow on Wednesday of last week when their star left winger Anthony Power broke his leg during a training session. Anthony has been one of Carrick’s top players for a number of seasons and his runs down the left have often left defenders scratching their heads. He has built up a truly wonderful partnership with left full-back Brian Barry so there is no doubt that the champions will be handicapped against the west of Ireland outfit.

Having said that, Carrick United have a nice knack of bringing in players from their panel who are more than capable of stepping up to the plate, and hopefully that will be the case once again this weekend.

It will be sad to see ‘Nipper’ watching the game from the sideline on crutches, and no doubt all local followers will wish him a speedy recovery and hopefully he will get the chance to share in more Carrick glory this season on the national stage.
