Tramore remain the team to be caught at the top of the table following this hard earned victory over a hard-working Dungarvan United team at a bitterly cold Graun Park on Saturday night last.
They are seven points clear of second placed St Saviours thanks to a goal from the former Dungarvan striker Micheal Downey. This was a game of few chances but nevertheless, Tramore remain unbeaten in league football.
There was quite a number of tough tackles during the course of the contest and both sides finished with ten players, as Francis Rockett of Tramore and Pat Quinn of Dungarvan were sent packing by referee Noel Purcell during the final minutes.
Downey strikes
Tramore, who had Alan Reynolds playing in the middle of the park, created the first chance after 39 minutes. Thomas Moore got on to the end of a corner kick from Leigh Quilty but he shot high over the crossbar from a good position.
Kevin Walsh had a half-chance for the visitors on the stroke of half-time but his effort did not trouble the seasiders’ goalkeeper AJ Murray. Early in the second half, Alan Reynolds found Sean Browne with an excellent pass but Browne was denied by a superb save by the Dungarvan goalkeeper Alan Landers.
The Old Borough outfit had a chance on 61 minutes when Nicky Donnelly knocked the ball down into the path of Kevin Walsh but his superb shot on the run went narrowly wide.
Tramore eventually scored what was to prove to be the only goal of the game, and perhaps it was written in the stars that the former Dungarvan striker would get the goal to win the game.
The goal arrived on the 69th minute. Robbie Phelan whipped the ball in from a right-wing corner-kick. The Dungarvan defence were unable to clear the ball properly and it fell to Sean Browne who mis-hit his effort, but Micheal Downey was in the right place to crash the ball past his former colleague, Alan Landers.
Dungarvan did not look like scoring afterwards and all they could muster were long-range efforts from Gavin Crotty and Nicky Donnelly.
Tramore now face a tricky away game against Southend United next Sunday. Dungarvan on the other hand will play away to fellow strugglers Bohemians.
