Local projects funded under the Transport 21 investment programme will not be affected by Budgetary cuts, the Government has pledged.

In a statement released this week, Transport Minister Noel Dempsey confirmed that the new N9 Waterford/Dublin road would be completed, on time and on budget, by 2010, as would the city’s new bridge and City Bypass. Progress will also be made on other key projects over the coming year, including the Atlantic Corridor which will link Letterkenny to Waterford through Sligo, Charlestown, Tuam, Galway, Gort, Ennis, Limerick, Mallow and Cork to motorway standard.

The Minister noted how Transport 21 had delivered real benefits for Waterford city and county, including state of the art, low floor wheelchair accessible buses for Bus Éireann and new environmentally friendly Intercity Railcars on the Waterford/Dublin line.

“With regard to the full Transport 21 package of investment, the current economic situation – at home and internationally – cannot be ignored. The ongoing projects will continue, will be completed. Other projects will be completed, but some will be subject to revised timelines”, the Minister concluded.
